GOP shooting: Scalise improving from brink of death

17 June, 2017, 11:27 | Author: Melody Ballard

A list of Republican lawmakers was found on Hodgkinson's body, CBS News reported, citing an unidentified USA official.

About 13 hours after the shooting on Wednesday, the hospital announced that Scalise had been shot in his left hip by a rifle and that "the bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding", the hospital said in a statement Wednesday.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly. Hodgkinson was eventually killed by Capitol police.

The FBI said it was investigating the shooter's "activities and social media impressions" in the months leading up to the attack. He was shot by police and later died.

President Trump did not attend because, according to the White House, there wasn't enough time for the Secret Service to secure the area.

President Trump delivered a videotaped statement, saying, "we will not be intimidated. the game will go on".

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday, adding that he also had visited a wounded Capitol Police officer at the hospital.

"It's my job to be pessimistic, so if you accuse me of being optimistic, I feel bad about that", Sava said.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was in "imminent risk of death" when he was flown to a trauma center Wednesday after being shot during an ambush of a GOP congressional baseball team practicing on a Virginia field. "We're going to pray for him this weekend".

U.S. consumer prices fell more than expected in May, according to the Department of Labor's monthly consumer price index ( CPI ). Clothing costs dropped 0.8 per cent in May while the cost of new cars and used cars both fell 0.2 per cent.

Since the shooting, members of Congress have spoken about a need for unity, at a time when polarization seems to be at an all-time high.

There was a loud ovation when Special Agent David Bailey, one of the Capitol Police officers injured in the attack, threw out the first pitch.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured.

The US president offered the assessment as a shaken US House returned into session a day after the shooting of Mr Scalise and others.

The Capitol's usual partisan combativeness, though not absent, was less pointed than usual, and warm words were exchanged between some lawmakers with starkly opposing political philosophies.

Addressing Mr Scalise, republican John Lewis said: "You are not alone".

Despite the hospital's comment about Scalise's progress, "critical condition" is still defined by the American Hospital Association as a state in which vital signs are unstable and in which "indicators are unfavorable".

The shooting prompted talk of improving security for politicians, most of whom are unaccompanied by officers in their normal day-to-day pursuits.
