Asked Wednesday about what the Senate health care bill could address, Cassidy pointed to Republicans' efforts to improve the individual market.

Senate Democrats are working to halt progress on repealing and replacing Obamacare, this time holding a late night talk-a-thon to protest the GOP health care bill.

Senate Democrats gathered outside the Capitol on Wednesday morning to protest the health care bill now being drafted by their Republican colleagues, which is to be unveiled Thursday and could be voted on as early as next week. And Alaska moderate Lisa Murkowski says she doesn't know how she'll vote or what the legislation says.

Some Republicans who could defect and oppose the bill include Texas Sen. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., joined by, from left, Sen.

Although GOP lawmakers have faced criticism for debating the health care bill behind closed doors, Barrasso argued that there will be "plenty of opportunity" for public discussion of the bill, citing an "open amendment" process on the Senate floor. "That's where a real problem is, because nobody - I shouldn't say that".

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, was so fed up with the secrecy he re-introduced a "Read the Bills" resolution that requires one day of consideration for every 20 pages of legislation.

Senate Republicans are expected to release a draft of their healthcare bill Thursday, with leadership hoping to vote on the measure before their July 4 recess. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, who also described the Republican's draft of the bill "morally bankrupt" and "evil".

Even so, lobbyists said final decisions had yet to be made on some issues. They unanimously oppose the GOP bill but lack the votes to defeat it. "It's really just Republicans really not making it a public forum", said Oliver. The AHCA used age rather than income to calculate subsidies.

With a 52-48 Senate majority, Republicans can afford to lose only two votes to pass a health care bill. That might satisfy Republican senators from states that expanded their programs, but conservatives have wanted to halt the extra expenditures quickly.

One provision in trouble is language defunding Planned Parenthood, which provides abortion services and has always been targeted by Republicans.

Republicans in the Senate have been working for weeks on the legislation that will supposedly repeal and replace several provisions of the Affordable Care Act, which the former Democratic President Barack Obama pushed for during his administration and is now popularly referred to as "Obamacare".
