Trump advisers and confidants describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets in the White House carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy.

Dianne Feinstein, top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she was "increasingly concerned" that Trump will fire both Mueller and Rosenstein. Trump confirmed in a tweet Friday he was under investigation and appeared to take aim at Rosenstein, calling the investigation a "witch hunt". Trump fired Comey on May 9. He has already been subpoenaed by the House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee. He heads the McDermott, Will and Emery firm's government strategies practice.

The NSA said in a statement that it will "fully cooperate with the special counsel" and declined to comment further.

Trump criticized Clinton for her use of a private server throughout his campaign, painting her as someone who thought of herself as above the law.

Trump has furiously railed against leaks coming out of his administration and the intelligence community since he took office. The questions included whether he had confidence in Rosenstein, whether he plans to fire special counsel Robert Mueller and how he knows he's under investigation by the FBI.

Manafort, Page and Stone have also been linked to the Russian Federation investigations.

The transition official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss post-election decisions publicly.

In response to the statement, former US Attorney Preet Bharara, whom Trump fired in March, tweeted early Friday morning that "Americans should also exercise caution before accepting as true lies about firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director & defamation of a war hero special counsel", references to criticisms Trump has levied against Mueller and James Comey.

In his latest tweet, the president seemed to confirm he is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice. But Robert Mueller has been appointed special counsel to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Trump demonstrated Friday morning that the Russian Federation probe continues to consume his attention, tweeting a stream of messages decrying the controversy.

Trump is an avid user of Twitter, with over 32 million followers on his personal account and more than 18 million people on the official presidential account.

The president has denied that he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation and has also disputed that he's attempted to block the investigation into his campaign's possible role in Russia's election-related hacking.

President Donald Trump's transition team has been ordered to preserve materials related to ongoing investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election, the New York Times reported on Friday, as Trump again assailed the probes.

Earlier this week, the investigation led by Mueller appeared to move closer to Trump.

The memo to former transition team members on Thursday also seeks specific information on five people, the Times reported, They include Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager; Rick Gates, Manafort's business partner; Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser; former national security adviser Michael Flynn; and Roger J. Stone Jr., an informal adviser to Mr. Trump.
