Another leadership test for Pelosi, who's weathered many

25 June, 2017, 02:22 | Author: Melody Ballard

It's no surprise that the Dems tanked, given the inept leadership they have in Congress, especially in the House, where Nancy Pelosi calls the shots as the minority leader. Nor have they identified a challenger.

"We need leadership change", Kathleen Rice, a representative from NY, declared on CNN. Most notable was the appearance of Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

"I think I'm worth the trouble, quite frankly", she added. He emphasized that the group "was a diverse group from an ideological, geographic and ethnic standpoint".

An Animal House, all-is-well quality colored Nancy Pelosi's Thursday press-conference postmortem of her party's Tuesday defeat in Georgia.

Rep. Tim Ryan (R-OH), who challenged Pelosi for the leadership past year, said on CNN: "The brand is just bad".

"What I really think is that leader Pelosi, looking forward to the 2018 election, has to ask herself this question: do I help Democrats win swing districts, which we need to win in 2018, or do I not?"

He added that one of the effects of the Democrats' "Trump derangement syndrome" is that they've forgotten about the issues.

Since 1990, she's raised more than $9.2 million for party candidates, including $739,000 in the 2016 election cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks contributions from candidate committees and affiliated PACs.

Pelosi also has a long history of holding her party together through hard votes - enabling former President Barack Obama to shepherd into law a series of Democratic-backed measures in 2009 and 2010 and later forcing Republicans to grapple with the politically damaging divisions within their own ranks. Ossoff clearly accomplished his first task of motivating the Democratic base.

Shulkin, who served as an undersecretary in the VA in the Obama administration, supports the legislation Trump signed Friday. Right now, it takes up to 264 days for an appeal to move through the process when trying to remove a bad employee.

Pelosi faces criticism and a new rival, Stephen Jaffe, in her next primary election.

"When it comes to personal ambition and having fun on TV, have your fun", The Hill reports Pelosi as saying. "I love the arena".

"We will carry those key lessons forward in order to compete in districts as Republican-leaning as Georgia, and in the dozens of districts on our battlefield that are much more competitive,"Luján said."

"We are listening - we're listening to other members of the caucus and we're just facilitating a conversation that I think we all agree needs to [happen]", Moulton said afterwards. And Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), the head of the Congressional Black Caucus, also joined Thursday's small gathering, though he stopped well short of calling for Pelosi to step down. Usually, these kinds of intra-party leadership challenges don't end well for the challenger: when a couple of conservative Republicans sought to run against Speaker John Boehner in January 2015, they only received 25 votes between them.

There's also an even more basic reality: Showing that the party will dump its leader if Republicans are persistently negative enough about that leader only gives the GOP more incentive to use aggressive tactics - and puts the next Democratic leader on tepid ground from the outset.

Nevertheless, comprehensive national polls continue to show the same underlying dynamic that has caused Democrats to hemorrhage seats at the local, state and federal level since 2010: Millions of Americans see the party as uninterested in their well-being - in Ryan's words, "not being able to connect with the issues they care about". It's not fair. It's not accurate in its attacks on our leader, but it's effective. After Hillary Clinton's loss to Donald Trump last November, a significant crop of Democratic lawmakers attempted to vote her out.

And Pelosi's fundraising prowess?

Pelosi suggested that Republicans do not like the city's progressive values. "Nancy Pelosi is not the only reason that [Jon] Ossoff lost [in Georgia], but she certainly is one of the reasons".

Pelosi's potential successors have included former Rep. Rahm Emanuel - but he left the House to become Obama's chief of staff and later to run for mayor of Chicago.
