The take-back follows by two days President Donald J. Trump's declaration that opioid addiction a national public health emergency.

Representatives from the US attorney's office, Drug Enforcement Agency, Kentucky State Police, Louisville Metro Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office gathered Friday to discuss the DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back initiative. The take-back will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Seven police departments in McLean County will be acception unused prescription drugs on Saturday. (DEA cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps.) They can find nearby collection sites at www.DEATakeBack.com or by calling 800-882-9539.

They partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration to safely collect and discard medications. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.
