Driver killed after 12-year-old jumps off I-66 overpass

Pictured Maryland woman, Marisa Harris who was killed when a 12 year old boy jumped from an 1-66 overpass landing on her vehicle.

Investigators said they responded to the scene at about 4:15 p.m. after the boy jumped from the Cedar Lane overpass in Vienna and onto Harris' 2005 Ford Escape as she was driving eastbound.

The impact incapacitated the vehicle's driver, but a 23-year-old male, front-seat passenger was able to steer the vehicle off the interstate. The teenager was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries, police said.

It's unclear how many children attempt suicide and fail, but the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention says that on average, taking into account adult statistics, there are 25 attempts for every life lost. He was not injured in the incident.

The mother told the station that Harris had graduated summa cum laude from Towson University and was learning at a graduate emotional well-being advising program at Marymount University.

The mother, who was not named, also told NBC Washington that her daughter was studying clinical counseling.

"Marisa had already immersed herself in the Marymount experience and the counseling discipline", the school said in a statement noting that Harris had recently traveled to Budapest, Hungary to attend the European Branch of an American Counseling Association conference.
