House Intelligence Committee releases Russia-linked Facebook ads

  • One sentence from the Senate's social media hearing should petrify Google, Facebook and Twitter

Colin Stretch, Facebook's general counsel, said at one hearing that Facebook had more than 10,000 people working on safety and security and would have more than 20,000 people working on those efforts by the end of 2018.

Those posts came from 120 fake, Russia-backed Facebook pages, that through likes, shares, and follows reached 126 million people, or half of all eligible American voters.

Twitter says its investigation has found almost 37,000 accounts linked to Russian entities in the lead up to election day.

Attorneys for Facebook, Google and Twitter have participated in a trio of federal hearings this week in which lawmakers grilled them on how they allowed a Russian influence campaign to buy ads and spread original content on issues including race, religion and gun ownership.

"We have a problem", Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., told the attorneys during the House Intelligence Committee meeting Wednesday.

Senators were not impressed the big tech companies sent their general counsels to three hearings this week and called on the companies to be tougher in the face of national security threats.

Democrats and Republicans both said the tech companies need to do more to police against foreign government abuse on their platforms. "You have to be the ones to do something about it or we will".

However, they will not endorse the Honest Ads Act.

Mr King criticised Mr Zuckerberg and his counterparts at Twitter and Google after the companies sent their top lawyers to answer questions. Facebook added close to 2,500 people this quarter.

What was orchestrated in St. Petersburg, Russia for a cost of about $200 in Facebook ads resulted in a real-life clash covered by local news.

King, who called Russia's influence online a "sophisticated worldwide strategy", used information compiled by Alliance for Securing Democracy to show that Russian Federation continues to try and interfere in American discourse by propagating hashtags related to President Donald Trump's attacks on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, Trump's catchphrase "MAGA", and the ongoing conflict in Syria.

In a compelling opening, committee chair Richard Burr (R-N.C.) showed two Facebook groups created by Russians - one called "Heart of Texas" that peddled anti-immigrant messages and one called "United Muslims of America" that promoted Islamic pride.
