  • An American woman just made history at the annual NYC Marathon

Flanagan, who had never won a major marathon, clocked two hours, 26 minutes 53 seconds for the stunning victory at the age of 36.

In the men's race, Geoffrey Kamworwor of Kenya took first, his unofficial time clocking in at 2:10:53.

It had been 40 years since an American won the women's field of the New York City Marathon. A pack of nine competitors consistently jockeyed with Keitany for the lead, including three runners making their NY debut: Kenya's Betsy Saina; Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska; and Sara Dossena, an Italian triathlete.

"This is the moment I have dreamed off since I was a little girl", Flanagan said after the race, tears streaming down her face. She was also the 10,000m runner-up at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

It was Flanagan's first marathon of the year following a left hip injury in January. Flanagan covered the 23rd mile in 5:11, and the 24th mile in 5:04 to build a 28-second lead over Keitany with one mile to go.

Behind her, but fading fast, Mary Keitany was chasing history, too: The 35-year-old Kenyan had won this race three times in a row.

Flanagan placed sixth in the women's marathon in at the Rio Olympics previous year, the top American finish.

Swiss athletes swept the wheelchair titles.

Repeat victor Marcel Hug gave Switzerland the men's title in equally dominant fashion, defending his championship in 1:37:21, more than two minutes ahead of British runner-up John Charles Smith.
