The center circle tested for 1,300 ppm of lead.

Lab results showed that two fidget spinners now sold at Target contained extremely high levels of lead, well over the federal legal limit of 100 parts per million. Company representatives argue that a fidget spinner is not a toy because such products are not intended for kids 14 and older. Additionally, online the "Fidget Wild Spinner Premium Brass" is labeled for ages "six and up".

"As a result, the fidget spinners identified are not regulated as toys or children's products and are not required to meet children's product standards", she said, per CBS News.

Federal laws limit the amount of lead in children's products to 100 parts per million (ppm).

In the meantime, U.S. PIRG still recommends for adults and children to stop using the fidget spinners. But Target doesn't appear to be backing down, not even to claims that they should move the fidget spinners to another section of the store. In a legal sense, lead regulations only refer to toys that are marketed for children 12 and under.

Fidget spinners, the multi-pronged, whirling gadgets that became so popular this year some schools banned them as a distraction, have been marketed as playful diversions meant to help people calm down and focus. Traces of lead may end up inside a child's body when fingers are transferred from a fidget spinner to a child's mouth or food. "Incredibly, Target and Bulls i Toy defend their inaction by pointing to the Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) declaration that fidget spinners are not technically "children's products" subject to legal limits for lead".

Harold Chizick, a spokesperson for Bulls-I-Toys, released this statement, "Safety is one of our top priorities. Beware of these two fidget spinners, as they have risky amounts of lead".

The Marion County Health Department offers free lead testing on all consumer products every Thursday from noon to 5:00 p.m.

According to Kara Cook-Shultz, the toxics director at US PIRG, it doesn't matter how the CPSC classifies these spinners - they're still being marketed as toys for kids. The product sells for $19.99.
