Oklahoma Woman Who Married Her Biological Mother Pleads Guilty To Incest

  • Authorities said Patricia Spann told investigators she had lost custody of her daughter and two sons who were adopted and raised by their paternal grandmother

In the USA state of Oklahoma, a local resident was sentenced to 10 years in prison for marriage with their own biological mother, reports the Tulsa World.

What's perhaps most shocking of all is that this isn't the first time Patricia has been caught in a romantic relationship with one of her children.

They married in March 2016, after Patricia convinced her daughter that they weren't violating the law by being together.

Misty Velvet Dawn Spann, 26, was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday for a bench trial but ended up pleading guilty and admitting to marrying her mother, 44-year-old Patricia Ann Spann, the Tulsa World reports.

Patricia also allegedly told investigators when she reunited with her daughter "they hit it off".

In Oklahoma, incest is a felony crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

In her request for the annulment, Misty Spann complained her mother claimed to have "consulted with three separate attorneys who advised there would be no problem with the marriage".

The mother, who reportedly was once married to her biological son as well, is set to appear in court in January 2018 to face her charges.

The mother and daughter were attempting to adopt a child that they had guardianship over and believed their marriage would speed the process, Fox News reported.

Detectives subsequently learned Patricia had also married her son in 2008. The marriage was later annulled in 2010 after the son opted out of the relation, terming it "incestuous".

"I think she's just a sick, twisted individual that has something messed up in her head", Cody, 25, told PEOPLE last September. "She forced my sister into this, there's a lot of people that know it", he told KWSO. "Why would you want to be with one of your own kids?"

Under Oklahoma law, it's illegal to marry a close relative even if the relationship isn't sexual.

The marriage between Misty and her mother was annulled October 12, six weeks after Misty filed for an annulment "by reason of illegality and fraud", the Tulsa World reports.
