Electric shuttle bus returning to downtown Las Vegas roads

  • A driverless bus was involved in a crash hours after it was launched on Nov. 8 2017

In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, D'oh.

The future is headed to Las Vegas in the form of a driverless, electric bus that will begin shuttling passengers along a half-mile downtown route beginning Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.

While the accident wasn't caused by the autonomous bus, this handily highlights the potential downside of an autonomous vehicle. But, the truck continued backing up until its tires touched the front of the shuttle.

Had the driver of the delivery truck done the same, all would have been well. All you need to do is honk your horn and back up a few feet to avoid a wreck in many circumstances.

The shuttle, developed by French start-up Navya and operated by private transportation company Keolis, was involved in a minor traffic accident within its first hour of service.

Sheep can recognize people's faces from photographs
Past research has shown that horses, dogs, and even mockingbirds can discern between individuals of other species. People recognise familiar faces easily, and can identify unfamiliar faces from repeatedly presented images.

"The shuttle just stayed still and we were like, 'oh my gosh, it's gonna hit us, it's gonna hit us!' and then it hit us".

The AAA rep told us the organization and its partner Keolis are "debriefing" after the incident and running all necessary safety checks before putting the shuttle back on the road.

Officials had hosted an unveiling ceremony just hours earlier to promote the oval-shaped shuttle. One such autonomous vehicle, a shuttle in Las Vegas, was recently involved in a wreck.

A representative for the city of Las Vegas said the shuttle was grazed by a delivery truck. "The shuttle did what it was supposed to do, in that it's sensors registered the truck and the shuttle stopped to avoid the accident", the statement read. While the crash will undoubtedly stoke fear among the more paranoid, artificial intelligence-fearing crowd, the best way to prove the viability of self-driving vehicles is to get more of them on public roads where passengers and drivers alike can experience the technology.

The city added it will continue operating the buses through Las Vegas' downtown area over the next year.
