  • The United States' role in the crisis in Yemen

This week, UN aid chief Mark Lowcock warned the Security Council (UNSC) that Yemen would face "the largest starvation the world has seen for many decades, with millions of victims", unless the blockade was lifted.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian community in Yemen also warned that the current stock of vaccines in the country will only last one month and if not replenished, outbreaks of communicable diseases are to be expected with fatal consequences, particularly for children under five and those already suffering from malnutrition. "We can do anything", he said, adding that it was the Houthis' "legitimate right" to do so.

The Houthis, fighters drawn mainly from Yemen's Zaidi Shiite minority and allied to long-serving former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, control much of Yemen including the capital Sanaa. The price of fuel has risen by 50 percent since the coalition tightened the blockade.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthi movement in Yemen said that it would close all air, land and sea ports to the Arabian Peninsula country to stem the flow of arms from Iran.

Mark Lowcock told reporters after briefing the U.N. Security Council behind closed doors Wednesday that there must be an immediate resumption of regular air flights to the cities of Aden and Sanaa by the U.N. and its humanitarian partners. The U.S. contends that the ballistic missile was Iranian-made and remnants of it bore "Iranian markings".

According to defenseworld.net, the announcement comes after Saudi air defense forces reported that they had intercepted a ballistic missile in midair that was sacked from Yemen over northern Riyadh.

"Washington aids the forces of aggression, politically and militarily, and has pushed them into risky pitfalls", Houthi spokesman Muhammad Abdul Salam said on the group's Al-Masirah TV channel.
