The four-day drills that began in waters off South Korea's eastern coast come as President Donald Trump continues a visit to Asia that has been dominated by discussions over the North Korean nuclear threat.

Responding to the latest statement, Trump posted a tweet dripping with sarcasm: "Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me 'old, ' when I would NEVER call him 'short and fat?' Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!"

The exercise is taking place while U.S. President Donald Trump is on an Asian tour and presenting a united front with regional leaders.

North Korea and its nuclear weapons program have plagued the USA for years.

"Even though we are not, some of us, we are not satisfied with his too much rhetoric rather than some sober approach on this issue", it can help to put pressure on North Korea, Lee said.

"I say to the North: Do not underestimate us, and do not try us", he said.

Nuclear-armed North Korea regularly denounces such military drills as rehearsals for invasion and sometimes conducts its own military manoeuvres or missile tests in response. He said "every single step the North Korea regime takes toward more weapons is a step it takes into greater and greater danger".

After North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho addressed the U.N. General Assembly in September Trump tweeted: "Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!"

During his trip to Asia, Trump attempted a symbolic stare-down of Kim this week at the heavily fortified border that separates North and South Korea. "On the contrary, all this makes us more sure that our choice to promote economic construction at the same time as building-up on our nuclear force is all more righteous, and it pushes us to speed up the effort to complete our nuclear force".

Asked if he could see himself being friends with Kim, Trump said: "That might be a unusual thing to happen but it's a possibility".

Speaking later in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, Trump said "it would be very, very nice" if he and Kim became friends. North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb test on September 3, prompting another round of United Nations sanctions.
