Apple delays Home Pod speaker until 2018

The delay means Apple will miss the key holiday shopping season in the fast-growing segment of connected speakers.

A prototype Apple HomePod is seen during the annual Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California, U.S. June 5, 2017. We'll start shipping in the USA, United Kingdom and Australia in early 2018. It will now go on sale in early 2018, Apple said. The Echo, along with the virtual assistant Alexa, became a surprise hit.

That's very different from the way other smart speakers integrate with third-party services. But Apple promised that the speaker would have all of Siri's smarts and stand out from the pack by offering superior sound quality. These specs puts it on par with some of the best speakers available on the market in its price range.

Delaying products isn't new for Apple. HomePod will work with Apple's HomeKit platform to control smart-home devices.

Australia votes 'yes' to same-sex marriage
The result paves the way for lawmakers across the ditch to join New Zealand and 23 other nations in legalising same-sex marriage. The result of Australia's non-binding same-sex marriage vote is now just hours away.

All that being said "early 2018" is also quite the vague target date; hopefully we won't have to wait beyond January or February. We'll let you know when Apple decides to release the HomePod. Missing the holidays could be a major setback for the smart speaker, which will compete with Amazon's Echo series, Google's Home series, and other several other smart speakers on the market.
