Taylor Swift's 'Reputation' Is 2017's Top Album With Platinum Week

  • Taylor Swift's 'Reputation' Outsold Every Other Album On The Billboard 200 Combined

Reputation is the first album to sell over one million copies in a single week in America since Adele's 25 shifted 1.157 million during its fifth week on sales (it opened with a record-breaking 3.378 million in its opening week).

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the US based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). That's more than the rest of this week's Billboard 200 chart combined, according to the New York Times. Swift's previous three albums have all sold more than a million copies in the U.S. in their first week- a feat increasingly hard to achieve as the popularity of downloads and CDs continues to wane.

"Reputation", Swift's first studio album in three years, marks another transformation in image for the 27-year-old country-turned-pop star, who is known for using her love life for inspiration without ever directly naming names. That distinction still belongs to her hit album, "1989", which sold 1.29 million copies in its first week in 2014.

Reputation's equivalent album unit figure of 1.238 million is the largest week for any album this year and the biggest since Adele's 25 bowed with 3.482 million units in the tracking week ending November 26, 2015.

"The album "Reputation" makes a great statement and becomes the biggest release of this year beating the new album given by Ed Sheeran, "÷" (Atlantic). And then there are the two volumes of me-focused magazines she put out through Target, which come bundled with the album, thus encouraging fans to buy it twice.

Only Swift and Adele have sold a million copies of any album in a week since 2012.
