The forward, 33, has reportedly been found guilty of sexual assault while at a Milan disco on January 22, 2013.
The Brazilian was found guilty of assaulting a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan nightclub alongside five other Brazilians in a court in the northern city on Thursday (23 November).
He now has the right to appeal, with the sentence not enforced until the completion of this process.
Now playing for Atletico Mineiro in his native Brazil, Robinho's lawyer said in a statement that the 33-year-old Robinho denied the charges and will appeal the court's decision. Even if the former Milan player loses the appeal, he would still have to extradited to serve prison time in Italy.
Robinho released a statement on his Instagram page stating that he had "already defended himself against the accusations, affirming that he did not participate in the episode" and that "all legal measures are being taken".
The court also sentenced one of Roubinho's friends, Ricardo Falco, another Brazilian, to nine years. However, Brazil does not allow for the extradition of its own citizens, meaning he would only risk arrest and deportation if he was stopped in a third country.
The forward sent shockwaves through the world of football when he made a sensational £32.5million deadline day move to Manchester City in September 2008.
However, he struggled to adapt to the Premier League and was sold to AC Milan for just £15m two years later after a loan spell at his hometown club Santos. He is now with Atletico Mineiro and made his last appearance for the national team against Colombia in January.
