  • Dozens accuse massage therapists at large franchise of sexual misconduct

A woman claims David Wilson, of Greenville, acted inappropriately toward her in 2009, according to the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

The chain and its franchises have largely ignored or mishandled the complaints, according to claims against the company.

A BuzzFeed investigation revealed that the alleged victims have filed sexual assault lawsuits, police reports, and state board complaints against the individual spas, workers, or the national company, a BuzzFeed.com investigation said.

The reports are shocking, so consider this a trigger warning. The woman reported him and he was sacked. The therapist who assaulted her was later sentenced to 15 years in prison. Over 100 women reported having their breasts or genitals groped.

In 2014, two other women said they too were sexually assaulted by different therapists at the same location.

"It should be something that they should train for and have an understanding of how to respond", Ingram said.

Massage Envy does not require any of its locations to take steps to prevent or investigate sexual assault (except in a few states where local laws require it by law). Instead, franchise owners are given vague instructions to conduct their own investigation. One former employee Kate Hardy, who worked on and off as a front desk associate and then clinic manager in Montana from 2014 until June 2017 also said the current policy "is not in place to protect the client".

Eventually, Ingram did call the police.

"The day changed my life forever", Ingram told BuzzFeed.

The BuzzFeed report recalled similar cases in other states in which women accused their Massage Envy therapists of assault with digital and oral penetration, among other things.

Buzzfeed reported that Massage Envy claimed in court documents that it isn't liable for sexual assaults that happen at its franchised locations. But that will be for the judge to determine.

Massage Envy released the following statement: "Each of these incidents are heartbreaking for us and for the franchisees that operate Massage Envy locations".

Ingram tried to report her incident to Massage Envy, saying that Dieter "stuck his fingers in my vagina less than an hour ago", and pleaded on the phone for a spa manager to remove Dieter's female client from the room.

ABC News also reported that another woman is suing for more than $2 million after she says a massage therapist grabbed her head and put his hands over her mouth and assaulted her.
