"Already employers are seeing the value of the new degree-level management programmes to meet the critical gaps in management skills, and government could do far more to leverage this investment as part of its Industrial Strategy". As well as AI, the strategy also makes a big play for future of mobility, with the pledge that the United Kingdom will become "a world leader in the way people, goods and services move".

Antony Walker, deputy chief executive of techUK, said that the industry body "strongly welcomes" the government's commitment to the artificial-intelligence sector.

The strategy has been in discussion for 18 months since Theresa May became prime minister, and aims to make the United Kingdom the world's most innovative nation by 2030.

The money includes £170m towards building affordable and energy-efficient houses and workplaces, and £210m for developing "precision medicines" and improving early diagnosis of illness. "Raising digital literacy goes hand in hand with maintaining and building on productivity gains in the industry, that continue to outpace the United Kingdom average, and supports the Government's aspiration of a digital economy that works for all".

Business Secretary Greg Clark said the Strategy "deliberately strengthens the five foundations of productivity: ideas, people, infrastructure, business environment and places", to address current weaknesses and ultimately boost the country's earning power.

Terry Scuoler, chief executive of the manufacturers" organisation EEF, commented: "The White Paper acts as a good foundation for a new partnership with industry where Government and business can ensure consistency in policy thinking and implementation to ensure the United Kingdom is a world leader in these new technologies'.

These challenges being guaranteeing the mobility of workers and goods, securing clean growth, dealing with an ageing population, and the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and the digital revolution.

In terms of the ageing society challenges, the Industrial Strategy refers to plans to leverage health data to improve health outcomes and United Kingdom leadership in life sciences.

He added: "We have a thriving research and science base and are home to a wide range of innovative sectors, from advanced manufacturing and life sciences, to fintech and creative industries".

"The government now needs to follow up on this promising white paper with concrete support for the AD sector so it can deliver its huge potential across the United Kingdom".

The Industrial Strategy is meant to push the United Kingdom towards the forefront of the data-driven revolution.

"For years, businesses have been crying out for more support to take advantage of the opportunities that new technology provides".

The government also confirmed that it is pressing ahead with a stream of Sector Deals, with Life Sciences included in the first batch.

"Addressing the UK's well-documented digital skills gap remains a major obstacle to overhauling the productivity slump".

This will see £246 million invested into battery technology. "Only then, will we create an innovative culture effective for driving the United Kingdom forward in this global and competitive market".
