Convicted War Criminal Swallows Fatal Poison in Court After Verdict

Slobodan Milosevic, the former Serbian leader, died of a heart attack in his jail cell in 2006, while his own ICTY trial was underway.

As Slobodan Praljak listened to his sentence of 20 years, he raised a small bottle to his lips in full view of the camera crew and shouted, "I am not a war criminal, I reject the verdict with contempt!"

Slobodan Praljak, a former Bosnian Croat general, drank the liquid after the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia upheld his 20-year sentence, report the New York Times, the Guardian, CNN, the BBC and NPR.

"I have taken poison", he said.

The judge presiding over the appeal quickly shut down the hearing, which took place at The Hague in the Netherlands, as the area was treated as a crime scene.

A lawyer told The Associated Press who has frequently defended suspects at the United Nations war crimes court in the Netherlands says it would be easy to bring poison into the court.

Agius had overturned some of Praljak's convictions but upheld others and left his sentence unchanged.

Officials said he was "receiving medical treatment" but Croatian state TV later reported that Praljak had died. Prajlak also once served as the assistant defense minister of Croatia.

They were convicted for their involvement in a campaign to drive Muslims out of a would-be Bosnian Croat ministate in Bosnia in the early 1990s.

Gen. Ratko Mladic, known as the "Butcher of Bosnia", was convicted last week of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and given a life sentence.

Wednesday's hearing was the final case at the groundbreaking tribunal before it closes its doors next month.
