CRAPSICAB COMPANY Uber has admitted that as many as 2.7 million United Kingdom customers and drivers were affected by the 2016 mega-hack on the company. The organisation has already parted company with its chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, over the 13-month cover-up.

"This is an approximation rather than an accurate and definitive count because sometimes the information we get through the app or our website that we use to assign a country code is not the same as the country where a person actually lives".

Uber spokeswoman Molly Spaeth responded in a statement, according to The Chicago Tribune, noting that the ride sharing company was "committed to changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make, and working hard to regain the trust of consumers".

Concealing a data breach isn't explicitly illegal under that legislation, but failing to properly protect the data is illegal, and the concealment may exacerbate the fine. "On its own, this information is unlikely to pose a direct threat to citizens".

ICO said it expects Uber to alert all the affected British users, both Uber drivers and passengers, as soon as possible.

Uber says riders do not need to take action and they had seen no evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident but has warned customers to keep an eye on their accounts for suspicious activity. People should continue to be vigilant and follow the advice from the NCSC.

The Dutch data protection authority will take the lead, as Uber's worldwide headquarters are sited in Amsterdam. Uber failed to notify the attorney general's office until the 21st of November which was more than year after the initial breach happened, which was a result of Uber paying hush money to the hackers to destroy the data.

Uber recently landed in trouble because 57 million of its users had been hacked, and the company spent a bunch of money to deliberately hide that fact from the rest of the world.

That revelation prompted a delay in a high-profile trial over whether Uber stole self-driving auto technology from Waymo, a Google spinoff.
