  • Reports: NCAA smacks Ole Miss with additional postseason ban, more scholarship cuts

The NCAA's conclusion is essentially that Ole Miss assistant coaches and boosters were running wild and committing recruiting violations left and right.

Hours after the NCAA handed down to Ole Miss the final penalties in an investigation in the football program, the fired coach in the middle of it all, Hugh Freeze released a statement. Most notably, the NCAA decided the one-year self-imposed postseason ban was not enough for the Rebels, who finished the regular season with a 6-6 record.

Because of the additional year of the postseason ban, Ole Miss players now can transfer without penalty, meaning they can leave and be eligible immediately elsewhere.

Today marked a big day for the Ole Miss football program, as it finally received the verdict on its NCAA infractions case.

Ole Miss will be banned from playing in a bowl again next season and the Rebels also received additional scholarship deductions in the ruling the university received from the NCAA committee on infractions Friday, sources told ESPN. As part of self-imposed sanctions, the university already cut 11 scholarships over a four-year period from 2015 to 2018.

The NCAA panel noted that this was the third case in 30 years involving Ole Miss boosters breaking rules, and said that even Freeze told them, "upon coming to MS, he was surprised by the "craziness" of boosters trying to insert themselves into his program". The NCAA says six football staff members and 12 boosters contributed to the current violations. Two staffers also arranged for fraudulent standardized test scores for three recruits.

The Rebels will also be on probation for three more years through November 30, 2020 and must pay a financial penalty of about $179,000. The show-cause is directly related to the NCAA investigation into recruiting violations.

Both administrators declined to offer details about the change, but Bjork added, "We strongly disagree with the tactics used by the enforcement staff to keep us isolated in the final months of the investigation". Freeze also resigned from the school when it was discovered he made several phone calls to an escort service on his university-issued cell phone.

Matt Luke was recently named Ole Miss' head coach after spending the past season as the interim.
