Now, as any Riverdale fan knows, outbrooding Jughead Jones is an extremely tall order, but, having read the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic ... yeah, she's definitely up to it. The Sabrina series is set up under Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros.

The series will be based on Aguirre-Sacasa's 2014 graphic novel "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", a decidedly darker take on the character than the ABC-WB sitcom that ran from 1996-2003 and starred Melissa Joan Hart.

As Deadline points out, the shift from The CW to Netflix is likely a response to Riverdale's popularityon the streaming service. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who serves as showrunner for Sabrina's predecessor, will write the pilot for the new show.

Sabrina's acquisition sheds light on Netflix's plan for the future: comic book adaptations. Under The CW's umbrella, Riverdale has a decided head start on creating a well-established context for both tales. The Sabrina the Teenage Witch comics have found a new home at Netflix. The release date has yet to be announced, but according to THR's sources, the two seasons of the Riverdale spinoff will reportedly "shoot back-to-back with the first batch filming from February to June and second from June to October". This dark coming-of-age story deals with horror, the occult, and witchcraft and finds Sabrina struggling to reconcile her dual nature (being half-witch and half-mortal) while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil. Perhaps streaming results from Riverdale appearing on Netflix enticed the streaming giant to make a move in acquiring Sabrina for themselves. Additionally, The CW has another teen witch drama in development, a reboot of "Charmed".

Expanding the Archie Comics universe may ultimately prove harder for The CW than for Netflix, even though Warner Bros.

And, as we've seen with its ever-expanded Marvel roster, Netflix has demonstrated an aggressive tendency to acquire and grow new stories told within the same universe.
