  • Russian Federation calls U.S. threat to destroy North Korea a 'bloodthirsty tirade'

Lavrov's remarks came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said "additional major sanctions" will be imposed on North Korea in the wake of a ballistic missile test.

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of attempting to provoke North Korea, saying the Washington is trying to make Pyongyang take "extreme measures".

Haley said during her speech at the United Nations headquarter that President Trump has called President Xi to stop all oil shipments to North Korea.

However South Korea's unification ministry cast doubt Friday on the North's claim it had mastered the technology to ensure a missile survives re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.

U.S. ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, on Wednesday called on all countries to sever relations with Pyongyang, including cutting trade links and expelling North Korean workers.

North Korea, in an announcement broadcast on state TV, said this week it had successfully tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile called Hwasong-15.

Top generals from the U.S. and Chinese armed forces met in Washington this week following North Korea's latest missile provocation.

"We were encouraged by that approach, but suddenly they are conducting surprise military exercise in October, then November, now we announced in December", - said the Minister. North Korea has been buying oil from Russian Federation as well but in much smaller amounts and continues to be dependent on Chinese supplies.

According to him, it is said in the last steps of the United States.

"We have already said many times that sanctions pressure has exhausted itself". It recently contended nuclear weapons are necessary to ward off "repressive US imperialism".

He said: "North Korea will be risky in about nine months or so because then two things are going to happen at the same time".

North Korea has been accelerating its threat to the U.S. and to the globe with recent missile tests.

"Our diplomats will speak from a position of strength because we do have military options", he said.
