Boone picked by Yankees as next manager

  • Brian Cashman interviewed six candidates for the Yankees' open manager job

Aaron Boone, who played 54 games with the New York Yankees in 2003, will reportedly be the 35th manager in club history.

Neither Boone nor Meulens have ever managed in the big leagues.

Boone, an ESPN baseball analyst since 2010, has never managed or coached at any level.

The New York Yankees have found their man. Boone retired after a 12-year playing career in which he finished with a.263 career batting average with 126 home runs. He tore a knee ligament during a pickup basketball game in the offseason after his home run off Boston's Tim Wakefield and was released by NY, which replaced him by acquiring Alex Rodriguez.

More and more, managers are hired with little to no experience in the job. Hopefully, Aaron will have more managerial success than his father, as Bob never led a team to an above-.500 record in six seasons. Cashman later said he was concerned over "ability to fully engage, communicate, connect with the playing personnel". "I think that's something that many of us relish in - the opportunity to have something on the line and a lot at stake is, I think, something that makes you want to go after it".

With reigning AL home run king Aaron Judge, power-hitting catcher Gary Sanchez, ace Luis Severino, a top-notch bullpen and ascendant young infielder Gleyber Torres all at his disposal, Boone should have the resources necessary to morph the Yankees into a perennial powerhouse once he gets acclimated to life on the bench.

In his conference call with the news media following his interview, Boone outlined his conversation with the Yankees, which he said centered around his stance and background in analytics and his communication style with players. Will Aaron Boone be able to take NY to the next step and bring home a 28th Commissioner's Trophy?

"I would say in a way I've been preparing for this job for the last 44 years", Boone said after interviewing for the job in mid-November, according to the Associated Press (via ESPN.com).

"I understand what it is to be a Yankee", he said. "I know what I would be signing up for". Boone was one of six candidates to interview for the job, beating out a group that included Eric Wedge and Carlos Beltran.

Thomson, who had spent 28 seasons in the Yankees' organization, most recently as the bench coach, is finalizing a deal to fill that role for the Philadelphia Phillies. He didn't try to cover it up, " Bret Boone told the Seattle Times during an early spring training day in 2004, the day the Yankees released his younger brother.
