  • Tiger Woods continues his remarkable comeback at the Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods has shot a 3-under 69 on the first day of the Hero World Challenge in Nassau, his first competitive outing after a nine-month injury break.

He shot five birdies and two bogeys to trail England's Tommy Fleetwood by three shots in the Bahamas.

That left Woods tied for 10th at four-under 212, 10 strokes behind leader Charley Hoffman, in his first tournament in almost 10 months following spinal fusion surgery. To come out here and score like I did was nice. "It was fun to be part of a scorecard again".

The wind was the strongest it has been all week at Albany Golf Club, and it took the air out of hopes that Woods' return to competition would find him in the mix at his holiday tournament.

Hoffman also had a bright start with six birdies and a bogey on the front nine and pulled away on the back side with six more birdies and two bogeys. I had a lot of adrenaline going and was hitting it a little longer than normal. "Those are the internal struggles I've not been through in a while". Woods was 1 over on the back nine with one birdie and two bogeys and now sits five shots off the lead at 7 under.

"Tiger is back", Carter said of Woods' Thursday performance.

Said defending champion Hideki Matsuyama of Japan here on Wednesday, "I am sure Justin or Jordan (Spieth), we haven't seen his best of golf, but if he gets back to that point every week he will be the favourite and he will win a lot of tournaments".
