ABC News reported back in August that Strzok had left the investigation, but said at the time "it's unclear why Strzok stepped away from Mueller's team of almost two dozen lawyers, investigators and administrative staffers". Page no longer works much with McCabe, these people said. It quoted people familiar with the issue.
At the time they left Mueller's group, no one publicly linked the two departures.
It is not clear what Mr. Strzok said in his text messages.
Among federal law enforcement officials, there is great concern that exposure of the texts they exchanged may be used by the president and his defenders to attack the credibility of the Mueller probe, and the FBI more broadly, according to the people familiar with the matter. A review of the texts is now underway to determine whether the two agents allowed political bias to influence their work, but regardless of what that investigation concludes, the story is sure to provide ammunition for those, like President Trump and his defenders, who have accused the Mueller investigation, FBI, and overall intelligence community of being driven by partisanship. Word of the texts could give new fuel to those demands.
Days later, then-FBI Director James Comey announced that he would not be recommending charges against Clinton for mishandling classified information on her private email server. Some conservatives encouraged Mr. Trump to fire Mr. Mueller, saying the investigation was tainted.
Strzok was a major player in the Clinton email and Trump-Russia investigations.
Mr Comey said that request came a day after Mr Trump forced Mr Flynn to resign his White House post. Much of the agency's senior leadership jobs are now filled by people who were put in those positions by Comey and Wray has yet to make many significant changes at the top.
