Mueller's Trump Finances Subpoena Was Never Sent, Here's Why

  • President Donald Trump gestures as he walks towards Air Force One at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York Saturday Dec. 2 2017. Trump spent the day in New York attending a trio of fundraisers

The spending was summarized in a report released Tuesday, the first of what Mueller's office said will be twice-a-year updates.

Funds were spent on personnel, travel and office space, the Justice Department said.

Asked in July if Mueller would be crossing a "red line" should the investigation veer into examining his finances, Trump told The New York Times, "I would say yeah".

The combined $6.7 million spent by Mueller's office and other offices supporting his investigation only covers the special counsel's investigation, not the various congressional investigations of Russia's meddling in the election.

The special counsel has over a dozen lawyers working for his office. Despite the worldwide focus of Mueller's probe, only about $2,800 was spent on actual travel costs.

The special counsel's budget itself has not been made public.

An investigation into President Bill Clinton by independent counsel Kenneth Starr cost about $40 million from January 24, 1994 to September 30, 1998, according to the GAO.

Since then, special counsels have been governed by a Justice Department regulation.

The single biggest cost was $1.7 million for salaries and benefits, including $500,000 for special counsel employees and $1.2 million for Department of Justice staff working under Mueller.

Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, appears to be moving at a faster pace than previous investigators.

Mueller filed charges against Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates on October 30. Mueller also disclosed that he secured a guilty plea from George Papadopoulos, who was a junior foreign-policy adviser to the Trump campaign, for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts with Russian operatives.

Between outright denials of alleged collusion, open criticism of the FBI's reputation and the recent confession of his former national security adviser, Trump only heightened suspicions around him, especially with regard to his relations with Russian businessmen.
