  • Nick and Sarah Jensen vowed to divorce if same-sex marriage became legal

More than 100 MPs have delivered speeches on the issue this week and most support a change to the definition of marriage. And I said to LGBTIQ Australians in particular, you have given us a gift.

The attorney general, George Brandis, said marriage equality will be the "imperishable legacy" of this government under prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Many Australians took to Twitter to post a video of their TV screens as the bill was passed - and various videos of LGBT+ Australians reacting to the news cropped up on the platform.

Australian law says couples must wait 30 days to get married once they apply to do so.

Congratulations to Australia, most especially to those who fought long and hard to make this a reality!

"The bill which the Senate passed is a robust bill, a whole range of religious protections are already in place", Entsch said in introducing the bill. About a dozen, including former anti-gay prime minister Tony Abbott, abstained from voting, The Guardian reports.

"It's a historic day for Australia today and I think the celebrations around the country when we finally ... achieve marriage equality are going to be huge", Greens party senator Janet Rice said.

The Marriage Amendment bill, if passed, will change the Marriage Act to legalise same-sex marriage.

Prominent LGBTI Australians including the swimming stars Ian Thorpe and Daniel Kowalski, the actor Magda Szubanski and the campaigner Kerry Phelps descended on the nation's capital, Canberra, to celebrate the final legislative victory that has followed years of activism and a three-month community campaign by the Equality Campaign. More than 12 million people participated.

Supporters of same-sex marriage gathered outside Parliament House and packed the public gallery in anticipation of the legislation going through.
