  • Trump's eldest son faces questions in Congress about Russian Federation

"In my view there is no attorney-client privilege that protects a discussion between father and son", Schiff continued.

Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., left, and Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., leave a House Intelligence Committee meeting as it breaks for a House floor vote from interviewing Donald Trump Jr., on Capitol Hill, Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, in Washington. This contradicts everything the Trump administration has said about the meeting, and creates a world of legal problems for Don Jr., as Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains.

He entered and exited the House Intelligence Committee hearing from a back door, avoiding the media, and nothing was immediately released about the discussions. He acknowledged having discussed the June 9 meeting and the emails that went into establishing that meeting after those emails became public.

This is the first time that House lawmakers have questioned Trump Jr. about his interactions with the President around the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting, which the younger Trump attended after being promised dirt on Hillary Clinton's campaign and after being informed that the Russian government wanted his father to win the presidency.

"Today, I understand why it took place to begin with and why it ended so quickly with a feeling of mutual disappointment and time wasted", she wrote of the meeting, according to NBC. It was then that Trump Jr., per the sources, said Clinton's testimony was not the same: she was testifying about the 2012 attack in Benghazi where four Americans were killed.

Trump Jr. had gone into the meeting expecting to receive information on Hillary Clinton that would contribute to his father's election victory.

But Republicans on the committee told reporters they weren't troubled by Trump Jr.'s refusal to answer questions.

In emails pitching Trump Jr. on the meeting, Goldstone said Veselnitskaya was able to provide the Trump campaign with "some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary (Clinton) and her dealings with Russian Federation".

Veselnitskaya said of the meeting: "Donald Trump, Jr. asked if I had any financial documents proving that what may have been illegally obtained funds were also being donated to Mrs. Clinton's foundation".

Goldstone set up the meeting on behalf of his client, Russian pop star Emin Agalarov, whose father, Aras, is a Russian real estate mogul with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This is silly. "Attorney-client privilege" shields conversations between attorneys and clients. Richard Painter, a University of Minnesota law professor who previously served as chief ethics counsel to President George W. Bush, told ThinkProgress that the privilege "only covers a conversation that is undertaken for the goal of getting legal advice". The official line from the Trump Administration since day one has been that that meeting was just about adoption.

"The general rule is that a conversation is *not* privileged if a third person is present for the conversation with an attorney and a client", Mariotti said. And that's now a matter of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller and Congress. "Counsel made a claim of attorney-client privilege".
