National Hockey League to increase salary cap by 3-7 million in 2018-19

  • Carolina Hurricanes could be sold as early as Thursday afternoon, owner says

On Thursday, the Emerald City was given permission by the league to apply for the expansion process and was given a price tag of $650 million.

The ownership group includes David Bonderman who is a private equity CEO and Jerry Bruckheimer who is a Hollywood producer. "We've agreed as a league to take and consider an expansion application and to let them run - at some point in the next few months - a season-ticket drive".

Earlier this week, the Seattle city council approved a $600 million renovation for KeyArena after the plans were submitted back in September.

The 2017-18 season welcomed the NHL's 31st franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights, at a $500 million expansion fee.

The league deferred its decision on Quebec City's expansion bid when awarding a franchise to Las Vegas.

Bettman says Seattle is the only city the league is considering for expansion.

"Pete and I built a relationship", Dundon said Thursday morning after meeting with the board's executive committee.

"It's an intriguing possibility, but we've got homework to do".

"The league has never been healthier", Bettman said according to Sportsnet.

The NHL was specific in pointing out that Seattle is likely an expansion team, not a relocation like some had speculated.

Despite the excitement around the announcement Bettman was quick to note "That doesn't mean we have granted an expansion team".

Hurricanes to be sold: Dallas billionaire Tom Dundon has signed a purchase agreement to buy a majority stake in the Hurricanes from longtime owner Peter Karmanos. We'll be working together closely.

Both men say the plan is to keep the Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C., despite Dundon's ties to Texas and the fact the Houston market would be attractive to the National Hockey League. However, he went on to say "But that's not something we're focused on right now because we don't anticipate anybody moving right now".

Bettman, who added the Arizona Coyotes continue to work towards a new arena, was emphatic in his remarks that the Hurricanes will be staying in Raleigh.

"It was very important, but it was never a real consideration", said the 74-year-old.
