The House passed the measure on Wednesday, 231 to 198, largely along Republican party lines. Mikie Sherrill, the most successful fundraiser now facing Frelinghuysen, quickly issued a statement opposing his vote on the bill. They cite the example of a gun owner lawfully driving with a concealed gun in one state only to be pulled over in another and jailed for illegal possession of a firearm.

The NYPD and other law enforcement officials are concerned over a move by the House to change the law when it comes to concealed guns. The bill, sponsored by Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chris Murphy (D-CT), is a modest proposal to improve reporting of records into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). "Strengthening reporting ensures those who are not allowed to purchase a firearm can not do so".

But opponents said it would trample on laws in some states with tighter restrictions on carrying loaded guns in public, such as NY and California. Just days before Americans mark five years since the horrifying mass shooting at Sandy Hook School on December 14, 2012, they hijacked this popular, common-sense bill and saddled it with the gun lobby's top priority, "Concealed Carry Reciprocity".

"I would venture to guess that you will see millions of applications out of the greater Bay Area and Los Angeles metroplex to states like Florida and Nevada", said Sam Paredes, executive director of Gun Owners of California, a gun rights advocacy group based in Sacramento.

"Just look at all the shootings in Hudson", Canelli said. "There's no cure for stupid". Attorneys general in 24 states - but not North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein - signed a letter supporting the bill as a measure defending the constitutional right to self-defense. She says, "I am not that strong".

Let's get something straight, right here and now. No member of Massachusetts' all-Democratic House delegation voted for it.

An affront to our city, our police force - and just basic decency - has snaked its way through one of what used to be the hallowed halls of the Legislative Branch.

A qualified individual must: (1) be eligible to possess, transport, or receive a firearm under federal law; (2) carry a valid photo identification document; and (3) carry a valid concealed carry permit issued by, or be eligible to carry a concealed firearm in, his or her state of residence.
