  • Activists gather at University Verizon to protest net neutrality rollback

California, MD- On Thursday Dec 14, the FCC is voting on a plan to end Net Neutrality.

Net neutrality regulations enacted in 2015 require that all internet traffic is treated the same by internet service providers.

On December 7, people all across the nation gathered at Verizon stores to protest, calling on Congress to stop the FCC from killing Net Neutrality.

It continues, "Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are guaranteed by our constitution, and we demand that such freedoms continue online". If one were to take note of the ever-increasing rate at which innovations have been made in social media, smartphone apps, and computing, then how could one say that the very regulations that keep the internet open are a detriment to progress?

A Civis Analytics poll (pdf) released in July found that 77 percent of Americans-73 percent of Republicans, 80 percent of Democrats, and 76 percent of Independents-are in favor of keeping the FCC's open internet rules, and 81 percent "agree that ISPs should not be able to block or throttle websites, or charge extra for preferred access to consumers".

Opponents of net neutrality noted that its elimination has benefits including giving consumers of the Internet more options, allowing them to pare down their choices and perhaps save money in the process.

Ending Net Neutrality supports a classist lifestyle.

Without net neutrality, these corporations could cut off access to websites they - or the United States government, which through the NSA has historically been tied to telecom companies - deem inappropriate for the public to read, just like in North Korea or China.

Protestors targeted Verizon stores because Ajit Pai, the current chairman of the FCC, previously served as associate general counsel at Verizon, which has been a longtime opponent of net neutrality.
