In addition to Golding and Fransen, the BBC reports that American Nazi Party, the Traditionalist Working Party and other neo-Nazi or alt-right accounts have been suspended for failing to comply with Twitter's new policy.

Those videos, which could be viewed by the president's 40-plus million followers, have now disappeared from his timeline. The enforcement of these rules will be a welcome step given how rampant offensive content can be on the platform, but the test will be whether or not Twitter will enforce them consistently.

Muslim Advocates, which also sits on Twitter's Trust and Safety Council, told the company in a letter that Britain First was trying to "perpetuate and fuel hatred and fear of Muslims".

All three accounts are listed on the Britain First website as "official accounts".

United Kingdom authorities arrested Golding and Fransen earlier this week over incendiary comments about Islam that they made over the summer in Northern Ireland, the BBC reports.

Twitter users may have to start thinking twice about what they post on social media.

Hateful imagery, such as swastikas and other symbols, will be hidden behind a content warning in tweets that allows users the option of viewing it.

Twitter is also prohibiting users from abusing or threatening others through their profile information, including usernames.

Instead of relying on the content of tweets alone, Twitter announced Monday, the company will now take into account what a person's profile contains - whether they're associated with any known hate groups or espouse ideology that violates Twitter's terms and conditions, such as white supremacy or vocal support of terrorist groups. "We'll evaluate and iterate on these changes in the coming days and weeks, and will keep you posted on progress along the way", Twitter said in a statement Monday.

'We're making these changes to create a safer environment for everyone'.

The platform has long faced criticism over how it deals with hate groups and content, which led it to removing verification badges from prominent U.S. white nationalists last month.

It came following criticism for verifying the account of Jason Kessler, a prominent alt-right figure in the U.S. who organised a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Fransen hogged the global limelight when US President Donald Trump retweeted in November some of her posts featuring controversial anti-Muslim videos.

Twitter said the verified badge was never meant as a sign of endorsement, and the firm's boss Jack Dorsey described the process as "broken".
