  • Facebook's New Facial Recognition Feature Is Unnerving Privacy Experts (and Maybe You Too)

Also, being told when people are using your photos as their own profile pictures is a win.

According to Facebook, the facial recognition technology will work by analyzing the pixels in photos the user is already tagged in. This new feature sends a notification to the user when someone else is trying to use their image in profile picture or on timeline. Facebook also published a blog post titled "Hard Questions: Should I Be Afraid of Face Recognition Technology?"

Facebook is also facing a lawsuit claiming that its face recognition technology violates a law in IL called the Biometric Information Privacy Act. "We decided, in consultation with privacy advocates and people, that the best approach for this offering was to notify people on Facebook and provide a way to adjust it in their account settings at any time". When photos and videos are uploaded to our systems, we compare those images to the template.

Given that Facebook can recognize your likeness without you being tagged, it would seem to be possible that the company could offer a setting through which users could choose to have photos of themselves pre-emptively barred from being posted at all.

In an initial tweet, the Tussey Mountain resort wrote: "Having difficulties with the chairlift. we are working on it now". Ropes were used to evacuate those trapped and those hurt received medical attention for minor injuries, 6 News reports.

Facial recognition technology has been a part of Facebook since at least 2010, when the social network began offering suggestions for whom to tag in a photo. You're in control of your image on Facebook and can make choices such as whether to tag yourself, leave yourself untagged, or reach out to the person who posted the photo if you have concerns about it.

The new Facebook facial recognition feature is created to detect when users appear in other people's photos, even if they're not tagged, and notify them so they can manage the situation. Facebook wants to prevent people from impersonating others on the platform.

With regards to helping the visually impaired, two years ago, Facebook launched an automatic alt-text tool that describes photos to people with vision loss. "Now, with face recognition, people who use screen readers will know who appears in photos in their news feed even if they aren't tagged", said the company.

We are introducing these new features in most places, except in Canada and the European Union where we don't now offer face recognition technology.
