  • Ryanair's German flights depart despite strike

"Ryanair has this morning written to the Impact union confirming in writing that it is recognising Impact and its Ryanair company pilot council", the carrier said in a statement.

The strike will take place from 5am until 9am on Friday 22 December, the Vereinigung Cockpit union announced today.

Ryanair had held initial discussions with Impact on Tuesday evening.

The union's Assistant General Secretary Ashley Connolly said they would be reviewing Ryanair's status surrounding cabin crew, saying it would seem likely that management will recognise them.

"Ryanair continues to play for time and as a result prevents the launch of collective bargaining", said VC negotiator Ingolf Schumacher.

"In the history of the VC, there has never been a case in which the collective bargaining autonomy has been trampled on by an employer as is now the case with Ryanair".

"We will be engaging with Ryanair company council, which is made up of our Ryanair pilots, and we will be developing our agenda", she told RTÉ's News at One.

Just hours before the German strike call, Ryanair was able to stave off year-end travel chaos on home soil after clinching a deal with Ireland's Impact union. We advise all customers in Germany to turn up as normal tomorrow, as we plan to operate all scheduled flights, and we will be doing our upmost to minimise any disruptions to the Christmas travel plans of our German customers.

Ryanair RYA.I has agreed to meet with German pilot union VC on January 5, a spokesman for the airline said on Thursday, hours after the union sent a memo to members telling them to keep their phones on for possible news on a strike.

Ryanair's conditional offer to recognize pilot unions prompted unions in other European countries to suspend their strike plans.

Last week, Ryanair was facing a threat of strikes from multiple groups of its pilots across Europe.

The union said it will meet Ryanair management on 3 January to agree a comprehensive recognition agreement that will establish collective bargaining procedures at the airline.

While IMPACT acknowledged that "the danger of industrial action had receded for the present", the union cautioned that it expected management to reach agreement on procedures quickly so that the parties could move on to negotiate substantial issues around pilots' pay and working conditions.

Earlier on Thursday, the VC had sent a memo to its Ryanair pilots telling them to stay alert for a possible "call-for-strike" message on their phones later in the day.
