  • Civil rights activist Erica Garner dies from heart attack

Black Lives Matter campaigner Erica Garner, who came to prominence after her father, Eric, was killed in a police chokehold, has died at the age of 27.

She is said to be remembered as a "human: mother, sister, aunt". Family members were being called to Woodhull Hospital early Thursday morning to say their final goodbyes to the young activist.

Erica Garner became a vocal advocate against police brutality.

A CT scan showed that Garner, who was being treated at a hospital in Brooklyn, suffered "major brain damage from a lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest", according to a statement posted Wednesday.

She had been hospitalized in Brooklyn, New York, after she reportedly went into cardiac arrest nearly a week ago.

Erica's mother told the Daily News that her daughter's heart attack was brought on by an asthma attack. "She left on her own terms".

Garner became a civil rights activist after video of her father's chokehold death at the hands of a NY police officer went viral and his final words "I can't breathe" became a rallying cry for police reform activists. He added that her family did not remove her from life support.

A Staten Island grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo in 2014; the officer remains on modified duty. Doctors said the pregnancy had put a strain on her heart, which was later found to be enlarged. His death, which was caught on camera as he repeated the phrase "I can't breathe", became one of the most important events in the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

"These people will co-opt anything to push their agenda", Garner said, calling out Clinton's campaign team on Twitter.
