Texans GM Rick Smith, coach Bill O'Brien's relationship is 'toxic'

  • The Texans are likely to retain coach Bill O'Brien according to an ESPN report

Texans general manager Rick Smith is taking a leave of absence to tend to his wife, Tiffany, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. However, the most important thing at the moment is the health of Smith's wife. "I remain committed to our quest to bring a championship to the city of Houston, yet my family needs me now and they are my priority".

For a couple of years now, it seems like the Houston Texans have been sitting on the fence in making the decision of whether or not to fire head coach Bill O'Brien. Smith was given a four-year contract extension in July 2016. He signed a four-year extension through the 2020 National Football League draft with the Texans last year.

"I don't have any comment on that", O'Brien said Sunday. I have a boss, and he controls that.

The Texans, who play at the Indianapolis Colts in their season finale on Sunday, are 1-6 since rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson tore the ACL in his right knee in early November.

The news of Smith's absence also comes at a time when there have been reports about a "toxic" and "dysfunctional" relationship between him and head coach Bill O'Brien despite two AFC South titles in four seasons together.

They will apparently retain him again for 2018, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who writes that while O'Brien is likely to be back, there are "issues" to be worked out with his contract.
