Once again, US President Donald Trump reiterated Saturday that Mexico will pay for the wall on the southern US border, despite repeated scoffs and denials by Mexican officials. But members of Congress have not yet agreed to spending any money on the wall, and Mexico has repeatedly said it won't foot the bill.

"I am not sure why President Trump wants to shut down the government over a multi-billion dollar wall that no one wants, is not needed and will not be paid for by Mexico", Sanders said in a statement.

Trump is also asking for changes to the legal immigration system.

Trump has pressured Democrats in Congress to approve the funding in exchange for allowing undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, and who had been protected by the Obama-era program known as DACA, to remain.

As U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., tweeted Friday, "The only thing that's not serious is the Gang of Amnesty's ridiculous proposal: amnesty in the millions, no end to chain migration, use diversity-lottery green cards for TPS aliens (T = temporary!), & pittance for phony border security".

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the wall would be "first and foremost" in any package that includes new protections for DACA recipients.

Mexico has steadfastly rejected Trump's demand that it pay for the wall and few doubt that USA taxpayers will foot the bill if the wall is built. At the time, he estimated the construction would cost $10 billion and cover the entire 2,000-mile border.
