Trump dissolves voter fraud commission

The Trump administration has dissolved the commission investigating alleged voter fraud that it said occurred during the 2016 U.S. election.

The White House blamed the decision to end the panel on more than a dozen states that have refused to comply with the commission's demand for reams of personal voter data, including names, partial Social Security numbers, voting histories and party affiliations.

President Donald Trump has shut down the controversial White House commission he created to investigate voter fraud, but he has handed the inquiry off the Department of Homeland Security, the New York Times and Washington Post report.

The former head of President Donald Trump's recently disbanded election integrity commission has charged two people with double voting in Kansas and Colorado during the 2016 election.

The commission was chaired by Vice President Mike Pence, but its driving force was Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach.

Kobach, a vocal supporter of tough voter ID laws, alleged Democrats wanted no investigation.

He followed that up with another tweet asking Americans to "push hard for voter identification".

No widespread voter fraud has been shown.

Democrats and voting rights groups were quick to cheer the panel's demise.

Bournemouth rally to draw 2-2 with Brighton
Bournemouth have had a hard season, but have righted the ship a bit recently with points in their last two Premier League matches. The result left both teams hovering above the relegation zone.

Leaders from dozens of states including Democratic-leaning bastions such as NY and Trump-won Republican states such as Texas, either refused to comply with the commission requests completely or rejected them in part citing privacy laws.

"The President's Election Integrity Commission was a vehicle launched with the singular objective of laying the groundwork to promote voter suppression policies on a national scale", said Kristen Clarke, the president and executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Trump added that states should move towards voter I.D. laws, which Republicans have adopted but critics argue disenfranchises poor and minority citizens less likely to have state identification.

Yet state and local election officials, including some Republicans, said they refused to hand over voter information because of privacy concerns as well as the fact there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Kobach told the Topeka Capital-Journal last week that although the commission's work had been delayed because of the lawsuits, it would meet in January.

"The obstacles and impediments used to hinder the work of the Commission is evidence that there are many politicians and activists who want to prevent the American people from finding out the truth", Von Spakovsky wrote.

Sarah Sanders, a spokeswoman for the White House, said the administration determined DHS was the best agency to handle the concerns.

"We mounted successful litigation against the administration that exposed its failure to abide by federal transparency requirements and vowed to keep fighting until the commission was terminated", said Kristen Clarke, executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

"The Democrats, both on and off the commission, made very clear that they were not interested in determining the scope and extent of voter fraud and, indeed, they were trying to stop the commission in its tracks", Kobach said. She also said the department is going to face similar obstacles in seeking information from the states.
