Lasheen Ibrahim, the chairman of the national election authority, told a news conference in Cairo that a runoff will be held April 24-26 if no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote.

Former Egyptian prime minister Ahmed Shafik has said via his Twitter account he will no longer challenge incumbent President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in this year's elections.

Elections nationwide are set to start on 26, 27 and 28 March, with electoral silence set for 24 and 25 March.

Results of the first round will be announced on April 2, Ibrahim said.
