Here's How Frozen Alligators Survived Last Week's Winter Blast

  • Video shows alligators surviving frigid, freezing North Carolina water by keeping their nostrils in the air

Following an arctic blast, Shallotte River Swamp Park shared footage on January 7 of how their rescued alligators are surviving the bitter cold.

Videos showing the alligators "just hanging out in the water", have garnered tens of thousands of views since they were published over the weekend.

They stick their mouths out of the water and allow the water to freeze around them. Alive or not, seeing a motionless alligator's snout popping out of a frozen over pond looks more like a scene out of a B-grade horror film than a natural occurrence. Their metabolism slows down in the cold conditions and they go into a lethargic state. But unlike mammals that hibernate, gators don't go into a deep sleep.

If the alligators didn't keep their snouts above the water surface, they'd perish in about 24 hours ― the maximum amount of time they can stay underwater without coming up for air.

According to Howard, this is completely normal as a survival mechanism for alligators.

Have you ever wondered how alligators survive in the winter?

But fear not, animal lovers.

Video posted to YouTube shows alligators surviving frigid North Carolina waters by keeping their nostrils above the surface.

"It's 65 degrees here today and the waters have melted", Howard said Tuesday.

Now you know. See ya later, alligator!
