  • Louisiana teacher handcuffed forcibly after asking questions at board meeting

Superintendent Jerome Puyau, who is the beneficiary of the $38,000 raise, told local reporters that the school board was not pressing charges against Hargrave.

From there, she was forced to the ground and handcuffed. "A superintendent or any person in leadership getting any type of raise, I feel like it's a slap in the face for the teachers, the cafeteria workers or any other support staff we have". Ms. Hargrave asked the board, as the marshal tried to grab her arm.

Deyshia Hargrave, a middle school teacher in the Vermilion Parish school system, was videotaped being escorted out of a room and then wrestled into handcuffs by a city marshal on January 8. During the public comments period, Hargrave was asked to stop asking questions, and she obeyed.

As people in the audience agreed with Hargrave, Fontana banged his gavel multiple times and ordered Hargrave to stop talking because the raise "wasn't on the agenda" - promoting several others in the meeting to disagree. Though, after the first time she was called upon, board members did answer some of her questions.

After continuing to criticize the board, Hargrave had been asked to leave and was escorted into the hallway where the incident occurred.

"I'm not - you just pushed me to the floor", Hargrave responds as the unnamed officer begins to push her towards the exit.

'Pioneer' US astronaut John Young, dead at 87
The former US Navy test pilot was the ninth person to set foot on the moon , an experience shared by three others after Young. John Young , a legendary United States astronaut, died of complications from pneumonia on Friday, NASA announced Saturday.

"As an organization that advocates for the dedicated school employees of Louisiana, we firmly denounce the mistreatment of Ms. Hargrave, a loving parent and dedicated teacher serving the students of Vermilion Parish", the union's statement said. Fontana said it would have been the marshal's duty to escort her out of the meeting but not arrest her unless she had committed a crime. A 4-4 deadlock became 5-3 in favor of the new contract as the appointed member voted in favor of the renewal, she said. While he did not witness everything that led to Hargrave's attest, he "absolutely" stood by the marshal, he said.

"When she realized she had to get out, she picked up her purse and walked out", LeBeouf said. "She's a great teacher".

She was booked into the city jail on charges of remaining where forbidden and resisting an officer.

Hargrave has yet to comment on her removal.

"What happened here tonight, the way that females are treated in Vermilion Parish - I have never seen a man removed from this room", she said.

The teacher was still jailed and later released on bond.
