  • Cambridge-based Redux bought by Google

On Wednesday night, a report revealed on Bloomberg quietly that Google acquisition of "Redux" could have major implications down the road. However, it is believed the deal went through in August. The Verge was actually able to try out the startup's technology previous year on a tablet.

It also has technologies that add haptic feedback on mobile displays, which provides vibrations to imitate what it feels like to push physical buttons. The sound quality is said to be "decent".

Although Redux has already integrated similar technology inside PCs and automotive infotainment systems, it has recently focused on bringing the same technology to mobile devices. With Google's acquisition, that may change soon. The reason was simple: in the ongoing fight to make thinner smartphones that pack in more and more tech, space is at a premium. The Pixel 2 in particular had very thick bezels that's very much the same size as its predecessor. If replaced, that could leave more space for a larger battery or other components: even, perhaps, the return of the 3.5mm headphone jack, were Google so inclined. For Panel Audio, they are using special actuators that "deliver naturalistic wide-frequency-range audio from a panel or display (without micro-speakers and apertures) - providing a versatile and robust overall solution". It could also improve waterproofing for future phones since it eliminates the need for speaker holes. At the CES consumer electronics conference in Las Vegas this week, Google is heavily promoting its voice-controlled speakers that compete with Amazon.com Inc.'s Echo device. Its main Google division started selling its own smartphones in 2016, so new engineering talent from Redux may help the company develop handsets with better sound. Their technology has been created for mobile and consumer devices, home appliances, automotive and aerospace applications but can be tailored to nearly any bespoke application.
