2020 WGC-St. Jude Invitational leaderboard, takeaways: Rickie Fowler in contention after Round 2

What at first looked like it was a bit of Brooks Koepka’s rut turned into an eclectic leaderboard on Friday morning at the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational. Koepka is still involved, but now he’s happening instead of running from outside in front of you.

Koepka is not alone among hunters. He was joined by Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Webb Simpson and Justin Thomas. They’re all trying to get rid of Brendon Todd, who is the only double-digit player under par this week in the bottom 11. Let’s take a look at his round and what appears to be the rest of the board enters Round 3 on Saturday.

1. Brendon Todd (-1

1) I am concerned about golfers who are not elite ball attacks that exist at the top of leaderboards based on placement alone. Todd is hitting the ball hard, but the lion’s share of strokes through 36 holes was achieved on the greens in this event. This is unsustainable in a mediocre area, much less in this dan a field where the best players on the planet are all hidden.

2. Rickie Fowler (-9) – Two really clean from Fowler, who has only two bogeys over the first 36 holes and is second in place near the hole. I keep coming back to something he said on Thursday about not thinking about rocking anymore but thinking about how he is trying to stop shooting. He’s been working through some swing tweaks, and it seems they’ve taken so far to really hit them.

“[I] I really focused a little more on things I could think of or keep things simple as far as thoughts go, “Fowler said this week.” What can I do on the golf course of wise thoughts versus working on the swing on the stretch and how to separate that. … We’re just trying to worry too much about swings and kind of going back to think about some fundamentals and how the body is moving and the weight is on the right side, and when the weight back to the left, I let myself go play and do golf shots. “

It can’t exist for long in the PGA Tour worrying about those different nuances, and Fowler’s stats and score reflect that he’s less worried about those and more about what the card actually says.

T3. Ben, An, Chez Reavie Brooks Koepka (-7) and 6. Sung Kang (-6) – Koepka with three putts from 3 feet in his 11 holes of the day and finished last on the pitch when he threw on Friday. Not good. The best news is that this is the best that has hit it all year. He is first from the tee to the green and first in approach shots. The swing seemed tremendous again on Friday despite the 1-over 71. If that’s possible, in fact I’m more encouraged after Week 71 by what I was after on Thursday 62 because I now saw a trend of multiple events from him hitting the ball really, really well. He has to stick around all weekend.

T7. Sungjae Im, Louis Oosthuizen, Webb Simpson, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Jason Day (-5) The encouraging thing about Day is that he was doing more of a tee for green than with his putter (which is often how he did it). A day, despite a back that looks like it could go by every minute, quiet has been really good over the last month. He was sleeping my week 40-1. I haven’t really won against it actually because of the quality of this board, but at least it seems like it could make it interesting over the last two days.

T12. Kevin Na, Justin Thomas (-4) – I may or may not say this because it was my pick this week, but Thomas ’statistical profile is absolutely perfect if you’re looking for someone who will make a big boost on the weekend. Thomas is the top five from the tee to the green and the top 10 in putting. The putter will recover from the way he was abysmal during the first two days, and he will probably end up a few rounds in the mid to high 60s. Or at least that’s what I’ll keep telling myself.
