Don’t worry you will still be able to buy a Hyundai Veloster N 2021 with a stick. But now you can also specify a dual auto-clutch with an “N Grin Shift” that, apparently, lets you increase the turbo boost momentarily for a slight increase in speed. Sounds fun.
The car is moving above sales with more than just an automatic transmission. Seats with illuminated logos (!), A larger standard entertainment infot screen, and a generous suite of standard driver safety features are in the mix. Along with this, the “performance pack” level that adds 25 horsepower is now the baseline of the car.
The launch of Veloster N exclusively with a manual transmission was a commercially discouraged move since, of course, many Americans and potential customers cannot drive. (You’re missing out!) But I think it will pay off for Hyundai.
The car was universally loved by test drivers, including myself, in part because a manual transmission goes a long way to making a compact sports car fun to drive. Now Hyundai has got a stack of glowing reviews, including Road & Track’s Car of the Year, to entice buyers u an automatic option to sell people who do not want to learn to work with three pedals.
But DCT’s still have to be good. Honda has yet to offer an automatic in the Civic Si or Type R because it understands that the manual driving experience is critical to the personality of these cars. Also, the CTR has enough HP that it would probably still be good with a very good automatic. But I don’t think Honda really has an automatic that can be both cheap and fun enough to make sense in the ever popular Civic Si.
Hyundai, on the other hand, may not have that problem. I still remember being shocked at how much the Kia Soul’s DCT felt and that car was barely optimized for spirit driving. I have faith that the Veloster N DCT will be fine, although I am compelled to add that I never specified it while the traditional manual was on the table.
Here are some details about this transmission that Hyundai published in it release today:
N Eight Speed Transmission With Dual Clutch Engine
Hyundai has developed the N DCT with manual or fully automatic methods and eight speeds for improved acceleration and efficiency. The DCT is equipped with dual-clutch electronic actuators, which provide ride comfort, fuel efficiency and driving pleasure. Unlike a dual-clutch dry transmission, the wet N DCT uses oil to significantly improve lubrication and cooling performance, as required in higher torque applications. The new dual-clutch N-type wet transmission that uses an electric oil pump for increased thermal resistance and reduced direct parasitism reduced on propulsion. LN DCT was fully developed in-house by N engineers, with a fun tuning focus to drive.
DCT Engineering N
The Veloster N DCT transmission employs two clutch assemblies, one for odd gears and one for geared and reverse gears. The clutch actuator assembly uses a lightweight electric motor-driven system for increased efficiency, optimized shift response and compact packaging. It also operates an external damper for improved NVH (sound, vibration and harsh). The DCT uses an electromechanical gear actuator, which delivers a lightweight design, higher fuel efficiency and precise shift control through the engine’s electronic control unit. DCT gear mounting uses hollow input shafts for an ultra-light and extremely responsive moving character.
I open Grin N
LN DCT even comes with similar features to games that enhance driving fun. N Grin Shift (NGS) increases peak torque by seven percent from 260 lb.-ft. at 278 lb.-ft. by allowing extra turbocharger thrust and maximizing the transmission response. When activated, the N Shin Grin mode causes the propulsion to change to its most sporty program within 20 seconds (as it passes). In addition, transmission customization settings are now available in “Custom” screen mode.
Logic Shift Race-like manual
This fun tuning goal to drive is further enhanced by a feeling of aggressive change that is enhanced by the “push” actuation. Under braking, with the driver resisting forward forces, lower gears are selected with an ergonomic forward thrust of the gear selector. Conversely, under the g acceleration forces of the rear, higher gears are selected by natural pull, back of the lever.
N Shift of Power and N Shift of Consciousness
N Power Shift (NPS) involves when the car accelerates by more than 90 percent throttle demand, relieving torque reduction by using upshifts to give maximum power to the wheels through each gear change. This gives the driver a reactive feeling of dynamic acceleration when moving, with a factory estimated time of 5.6 seconds at 60 mph. The N-Way Reverse (Track Track) distinguishes when road conditions are optimal for dynamic driving and activates automatically, by selecting the right gear and scheduling the switch for optimal performance.
Whoa, Power Shift! Grin changes !! Shift Sense Sense !!! Hyundai sure … felt compelled to name things. But if it translates into a good driving experience, it doesn’t matter that the car brochure reads like a comic. .
For the more mature set, you may be interested to know that the safety features now baked in V Veloster N always include: “Front Collision Avoidance Aid, Lane Assistance, ‘Lane Maintenance, Driver Activity Warning, Collision Rescue Assistance and Rear Traffic Rape Warning Post. “
The lit logo seats, which are something, apparently also save 4.4 pounds on the old ones and so that’s cool.
Price updates are TBD but the Veloster N 2021 is supposed to be Hyundai stores coming in October. I would think that the drop of the “standard” 250 horsepower package means a baWill the price will be closer to $ 30,000, but we’ll see!
