Pop superstar Billie Eilish is already known for experimental music videos. The latter, for her new single “My Future,” is no exception.
In the new video, Eilish swaps the dark, dark atmosphere of most of her videos to jump into the animated world. The video opens with an animated Eilish sitting in a forest during a rainstorm and moonrise. The rain gathers on the pools and on the leaves and the environment is clearly inspired by movies like Studio Ghibli Princess Mononoke.
As the song continues, she wanders through the forest, setting aside the dark clouds and rain with her presence and causing a new life to win from the ground. The newly formed roots and vines wrap themselves around Eilish, lifting it into the sky and out of the beautiful new green and forest. The whole video plays like between them Totoro My Neighbor u Nausicaä of the Wind Valley. It’s beautiful and hopeful, but not without some of the melancholy and deep sadness that make the films of Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki.
While this is Eilish’s second animated music video, it’s the first to take on a lighter, more wholesome tone. Her last animated video was for the song “You Should See Me in the Crown,”; where she teamed up with Takeshi Murakami to create a video with an apocalyptic setting that ends with Billie’s animated film turning into a giant monster … away from my “future” vision of Studio-Ghibli’s spring style.
