Fantasy Football 2020: Damien Williams picks and Clyde Edwards-Helaire jumps in Round 1 of drafts

Damien Williams has informed the Chiefs that he intends to choose from the 2020 season on concerns related to COVID-19. Williams was a reliable post-season hero for the Chiefs and appeared to be the team’s starter to start the season, but his personal choice obviously changed.

And so it happens that Kansas City spent a first-round pick in the draft on a certain someone we were constantly discussing. A rookie who won a national championship at LSU and who is among the most polished step catchers in the draft class. A man who, without playing one of the bottom of professional football, will be a first-round pick. And a man already going by his initials.

CEH Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

There was no doubt about his race pole after 201

9. As LSU’s lead comes back, Edwards-Helaire rushed for 1,414 yards and caught 55 passes for another 453 yards, totaling 17 touchdowns in 15 games. He specifically went through nice numbers against stiff competition, running to 627 yards (6.0 yards per carry) and seven scores on 105 carries with 258 yards and a score he received on 32 grabs in six games against the top 10 competition (there was a seventh game but he only had two carries in it).

How far does Edwards-Helaire stand now? The Fantasy Football today The crew dropped in on the news podcast. Follow all our podcasts and subscribe here.

Edwards-Helaire is the first running back Andy Reid to ever take a first-round pick. There is a good reason for this. Beyond college production, Edwards-Helaire has profiled himself as the most accomplished three-man player in the NFL. He walks with good patience and a very good cutting ability, and as he passes back he is already quite accomplished in terms of catching the ball and creating yards after the catch. He would be a perfect prospect if he ran a little faster (his 40th time in the NFL League was 4.6 seconds). Reid and GM Brett Veach famously compared Edwards-Helaire to Brian Westbrook after the selection, but in reality, Edwards-Helaire compares favorably to Kareem Hunt.

The same Kareem Hunt who amounted to nearly 1,800 yards with 11 touchdowns as Rookie Chiefs. And then he averaged over 100 total yards per game with 14 points in 12 outings along with Patrick Mahomes.

Fantasy managers can connect the dots here. Reid’s offenses were big for the chase, and there is no doubt that this will be the case again in 2020 until Mahomes is under the center threatening deep ball games after the games. Safety often, if ever, loosens the propeller line to discourage Heads from driving. Reid’s story includes several rookie running backs, such as Hunt, who did well in their first season. Edwards-Helaire is in this fortuitous position.

It’s safe to say that Edwards-Helaire, who bans for a fall in training camp, will be the Chiefs ’top in 2020 and in a position to have a rookie season similar to Hunt’s. And this, friends, is worth risking the first round. Weighing his head against any other unobtrusive rush of the Fantasy rusher puts him as high as the sixth overall in the PPR and the seventh overall in the absence of PPR. Miles Sanders was someone I was happy to draw with 1,500 potential for a total yard. I think Edwards-Helaire can overcome that. I would like to have a CEH.

The solidification of this projection is Heads running a fund chart that does not greatly threaten Edwards-Helaire’s status. Really, the only running back that can be challenging for some playing time is DeAndre Washington, the former Raider who has some good experience along with impressive versatility to help Edwards-Helaire lift the load. Guys like Darwin Thompson and Darrel Williams, while skilled in their own ways, just don’t seem to be serious threats. Nor does it happen that the Chiefs do not sign at this point of the training camp.

I think Washington requires a late round selection. In addition to being an experienced runner who can play three incidents and supplement Edwards-Helaire, Washington has the built-in advantage of playing with Mahomes at Tex Tech for two seasons. This chemistry, particularly in a year where teams don’t have a lot of practices to get ready for the regular season, is an advantage. Remember Washington’s name late in Draft Day.
