Massachusetts health officials announced another 29 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday, bringing the death toll in the state to 8,360.
Officials also confirmed another 356 cases of the virus, bringing the total number of cases across the state to at least 109,096. That based on 15,556 new molecular tests reported on Wednesday, according to the Department of Public Health.
The number of new cases has jumped above yesterday, but health officials have noted that due to a technical error reported by a hospital group, there have been delays in the results of the laboratory test. the supplier that has been reported to DPH.
“These newly reported test results were included in today’s report and are reflected in today’s total cases,” officials noted. “However, these positive test results have been assigned retrospectively to the appropriate test data.”;
There are currently 390 people hospitalized with the virus.
The latest data comes in cases in some of the hardest-hit states, such as Florida, California, Texas and Arizona have begun to fluctuate and even decline, according to the New York Times. But some places, particularly Arizona, Texas and South Carolina, have seen the largest increase in newly reported deaths.
The seven-day average of new cases across the U.S. since Tuesday is 65,218, the Times reports. There are currently more than 4.3 million cases of the virus in the United States and about 150,340 deaths.
The infection rate in Massachusetts has risen slightly in recent weeks, which officials believe is the result of several “small clusters” of cases linked to recent meetings, government Charlie said Baker on Monday. The rate of positive tests increased from about 1.7% to about 2%, Baker said.
On Monday Baystate Health reported an outbreak of new infections at Baystate Medical Center affecting 23 employees and 13 patients. Baystate Health president and CEO Dr. Mark Keroack said the outbreak could be traced to one employee, who returned to work after visiting a state identified as a new virus hotspot.
There was also an outbreak in the town of Chatham Cape Cod after at least 10 people who attended a house party on July 12 tested positive for coronavirus. Chief officials announced on Sunday that they would offer pop-testing to anyone who attended the party, or have close contact with anyone who was there.
On Tuesday, Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, which has been the site of one of the deadliest deaths from coronavirus outbreaks since the pandemic began, said it will be suspending visits after a resident of the facility that recovered from COVID-19 was again positive for the virus.
