NASA launches the Mars rover next Thursday: How to watch live

This story is part of it Welcome to Mars, our series explores the red planet.

NASAV’s Perseverance rover is located on the launch pad and ready to go to Mars Thursday, with an 80% chance of favorable weather on Wednesday at noon. NASA will pass the event as the Rover car takes off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on a Unit-Launch Alliance (ULA) V rocket. Pre-launch coverage starts at 4 am PT and the two-hour window opens at 4:50 am PT.

NASA announced on July 22 that the mission had undergone its flight review, which includes an assessment of spacecraft preparedness, rocket, procedures and personnel. “Mars is a tough customer, and we don’t take anything for granted,” said Perseverance mission deputy project manager Matt Wallace.

The launch depends on the weather and technical factors. It was before delayed from earlier in the month due to technical issues.

How NASA’s new Perseverance Mars rover compares to …

5.49

It’s been almost nine years since NASA sent its previous rover, Curiosity, to Mars. Perseverance is the most advanced robot that NASA has sent to the surface of Mars. Once fixed in the Jezero Crater – an area with a history of water – the Rover will begin a mission to look for signs of ancient microbial life.

The rover is not going alone. It also carries An experimental helicopter named Ingenuity under her belly.

NASA’s mission is one of several launches to Mars within a limited window of opportunity this year when the red planet is in a favorable position relative to Earth. Missing that window means waiting until 2022 next chance. Perseverance could potentially launch until mid-August if needed.

The United Arab Emirates successfully sent its Hope probe on July 19th, u China has launched its own orbiter and rover on July 22 All three missions are scheduled to reach Mars in February 2021.
