Breonna Taylora mother knew in advance that her daughter would become the first person except Oprah to appear solo on the cover of O magazine … because O told herself.
Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ … Oprah’s team reached out to one of Breonna’s family lawyers Ben Crump, several weeks ago to see if she could make direct contact with her mother, Tamika Palmer.
We were told that there was no hesitation on the part of Breonna’s family … Oprah got Tamika’s number and gave her a phone call in early June … shortly after O sent a birthday tribute to Breonna on Instagram.
We were told it was the first time the two women had spoken, and it was just on their call. That’s when Oprah revealed her plan to Tamika to appear to Breonna on the cover and ask for her blessing.
Our sources say that Tamika was “completely deserved” of Oprah’s gesture – calling it an incredible moment – and of course, she honored O for doing something she had never done before as a tribute to Breonna.
As we reported … Breonna’s cover it is historic, because it’s the only time Oprah hasn’t been on it. She stepped aside for one of her last printed editions and dedicated it to Taylor by stating, “If you turn a blind eye to racism, you have become an accomplice to it.” Frightened on the cover are the words … “THE THINGS OF HER LIFE.”
Breonna was killed by Louisville police on March 13 at her own home during a botched raid on a “no recourse” mandate. So far, her death has not resulted in any arrests, sparking a number of protests … along with the death of George Floyd.
In an interview with “CBS This Morning,” Oprah expressed her desire to protest as well, and said … “if it weren’t for COVID I would have taken to the streets.”
Fortunately, she found another impactful way to do her part.
